Want
divorce? Add extra sugar to tea
VADODARA: Nitin Shah (name changed) recently divorced his
wife simply because she kept eggs in the refrigerator. As
a vegetarian, he found this offending enough to ask for divorce.
In fact,
if you thought using a bathing soap your wife doesn’t like
may lead to just a small argument, think again. Chances are
that she might be planning to divorce you because she can’t
stand that fragrance!
“The reasons
for which couples seek divorce are very frivolous and laughable
these days. In such cases, both partners are well-educated
and come from good families,” said advocate Shabiya Sindhi,
who fights divorce cases.
“I got
a case where the husband wanted a divorce as his wife would
add more sugar to his tea. He alleged that she wanted him
to die of diabetes.
I had
a tough time convincing them, but they got divorced,” added
Sindhi, who gets about 10 such cases every month. The Vadodara
district court gets hundreds of such divorce cases every month.
Of these a majority end up in divorce.
Advocates
say many couples are not even ready to go for counselling.
“Financial independence and low tolerance levels are responsible
for such break-ups. Both husband and wife are not ready to
adjust or compromise with each other.
The cosmopolitan
and stressful lifestyle has also led to rise in such divorces,”
said advocate Sapan Teredesai. “A couple got separated without
spending even one hour with each other after marriage.
The girl,
who had recently graduated from the home science faculty of
MS University, wanted divorce as the business run by her husband
was in his brother’s name. The court passed their divorce
orders few weeks ago,” said Sindhi.
“In most
cases, couples are at loggerheads for quite some time and
a small argument gives an outlet to their simmering tension
that finally leads to divorce,” said sociologist N Rajaram.
