Man
booked for torturing NRI wife
Father
of a Norway-based girl alleged that his son-in-law, a resident
of Phagwara who married his daughter to get citizenship of
that country, was forcing her to divorce him and marry his
younger married brother, so as to settle him abroad.
Strangely,
he is planning to marry his brother’s wife to get her citizenship
of Norway.
The police
have booked him for dowry, cheating and assault at Satnampura
police station in Phagwara on July 12. The girls’ parents
have written to the Norway government to send him back.
Seema
Mandla, who hails from Kala Sanghia village in Kapurthala
district, married Anil Kumar of Hadiabad in Phagwara on February
11, 2000. Sham Lal, father of Seema, said he has been settled
in Norway for the last about three decades, but his daughter
had an Indian passport till her marriage. “After her marriage,
her husband started pressing her to attain Norway citizenship,
which she got easily as she was brought up there. On the basis
of her citizenship, her husband also got it,” he said.
“But after
getting the citizenship, he started forcing her to divorce
him and marry his younger brother, but when my daughter denied,
he started torturing her physically and mentally and also
demanded dowry,” he added.
“We started
fulfilling his demands and purchased a new house for him,
but his was greed increasing by the day. He has thrown my
daughter out of the house. We complained to the police and
got him booked in two cases,” alleged Sham Lal.
“Even
his parents had beaten her up when they came to Norway. And
now when we are here on vacation, my daughter went to her
in-laws’ house in Phagwara, where she was beaten up again.
She was even admitted to the hospital,” said her father.
